Zanzibar is a small and beautiful island with clear turquoise water and white sands. The island has the best beaches and plenty of entertainment. For example, scuba diving, farms, spices and huge markets filled with a variety of seafood. And this is Africa. The same one: with crocodiles, hippos and other liveliness.
The main airport of the Zanzibar archipelago is located 5 kilometeres away from the capital. This is definitely not a favorite place for travelers. Most tourists are faced with long lines and a complete lack of comfort. Moreover, the inside of the airport can be quite hot due to air conditioning problems.
Also get ready for the lack of service and for the fact that at every step you will be demanded money for each service. Some tourists call Zanzibar Airport one of the worst experiences in the world. But still, do not forget that this is just a few hours that you can quite survive for the sake of further adventures.
Between the airport and the capital of Zanzibar there are only 8 kilometers or 15 minutes by car. The cheapest way to get to the city center is through Dala Dala city buses. This is the only city transport on the island, so you don’t have to choose one.
Buses can also be called only conditionally. Because usually it’s just a converted truck. But there are also real vans. The bus stop is located near the airport, you just need to follow the crowd of travelers. A ticket costs about 20 cents.
Fans of greater comfort will enjoy a taxi. For about $ 15 you will be taken to the center with a little more comfort. But the price is better to agree in advance.
It rains almost all the time in Zanzibar. The dry season is quite short. It’s just worth being always ready to get wet.
Zanzibar's reputation as Africa's main beach is fully justified. You can safely come here only for wallowing under the sun by the pool or ocean. But for a real traveler it will definitely be not enpugh. If arrived, should explore! Moreover, in Zanzibar there is something to see: from amazing jungle to fragrant plantations with spices and unusual historical buildings.
This is the heart and soul of the island. This is an incredible mix of winding alleys and old Arabic-style buildings. Here you can fully (both physically and mentally) immerse yourself in the magic of the city. Enjoy the local culture while sipping a cup of coffee in one of the local cafes, or just wander the streets, discovering unique little places at every turn.
The giant picturesque forest is the last authentic forest in Zanzibar. It grows near Chwaka Bay. This area is often flooded during the rainy season. This is what saves the unique swamp forest from destruction. You can get here by bus, taxi or with an organized tour.
Nungwi is a village in the northwest of Zanzibar. Although this is a fairly popular place, there are no crowds of tourists. What more can a beach traveler want? Finding a better beach in Zanzibar is impossible. So if you want to splash in the water and soak up the sun, while you don’t need a luxury hotel with a pool by the coastline, go straight to Nungwi.
A half-hour boat trip to Prison Island will provide an opportunity to look into the dark past of the island. Once upon a time, slaves were kept in this place before being sent to the “white lands”. And when slavery was abolished, prisoners with deadly diagnoses were sent here to live the last days. But all these horrors have long ceased. Now Prison Island with ruins on the site of old buildings has become a nature reserve for giant turtles.
This place is also called the Palace of the Sultan. The Palace Museum is the central attraction of the Stone Town. No self-respecting tourist can pass him by. The museum is located on the promenade overlooking the ocean. It was built in the 19th century. After the 1964 revolution, the government was moved here and renamed the People’s Palace. And now it is one of the main museums of Zanzibar.
An extremely important and visually stunning historic building in the Stone Town. The permanent exhibition of the House of Miracles tells about the culture of Zanzibar and the Swahili people. This is the grandest and tallest building in the historical part of Zanzibar by far. It is located in a conspicuous place, it is impossible to miss it. Just walk towards the promenade.
Try a local pizza: a small ball of dough is rolled out slightly, a wide variety of fillings are pushed inside and fried on both sides. It looks more like a pie, but it’s tasty.
Everywhere in Zanzibar you will find octopus. Literally in any dishes. It is added to curry, and grilled, and stewed in coconut milk, and cooked with rice. Feel free to octopuses and try them in any variations.
In Zanzibar, you can try something called chocolate. In fact, this is not chocolate, but sweet sesame bars. In other words, kozinaki. It would seem such a simple treat, but is very popular among both local and tourists.
